How can a dog lose its voice. Many of the other causes of a hoarse or lost voice usually occur in older dogs rather than puppies but are not necessarily exclusive to dogs. Severe allergies hypothyroidism Addisons disease throat tumors and infection after surgery can all cause a puppy to lose his voice.
There are several reasons why a dog may have aphonia or lost his voice. Some cruel people make surgery on their furry and remove the vocal cords so they cant bark but in other cases this aphonia is due only to a swollen throat due to laryngitis. Your dog may have an ear throat or respiratory infection compromising his ability to vocalize.
This type of ailment may be accompanied by sensitive reddening ears or a hesitancy to eat due to trouble with swallowing. This condition is often treated with antibiotics and possibly anti-inflammatory medications. If your dog opens his mouth to bark and little or no voice comes out the voice box may have lost its function.
Affected dogs may develop a voice change and the bark may sound hoarse and raspy. Your dog may try to bark but only emit a sound that ends in a hoarse croaky whisper. In more severe cases affected dogs may also develop episodes of respiratory distress.
Your dogs incessant barking is more than just a nuisance. Over time it can actually cause damage to his voice box or larynx. If your noisy pal becomes hoarse take him to the vet for an examination.
Your vet must rule out other more serious causes of canine hoarseness such as kennel cough or throat cancer. There are many causes of hearing loss in dogs but for elderly dogs the cause is often degenerative changes in the nerves found inside the ear. One home remedy for dog laryngitis is to sooth his throat by offering him ice cubes to lick and let his voice or larynx recover by keeping him calm.
Before leaving home the next time tire him out with a long walk allowing him to sniff frequently stimulates the brain and this can be equally tiring as a long walk. Its not just humans who sometimes lose their voices – your pup can also suffer from laryngitis and lose his robust bark. This is a vexing problem in veterinary medicine. I have at least 10 or 20 cat patients who have lost their voices either temporarily or permanently. So far I have not been able to pin down a definite cause in many of them.
One or two had visible oral cancers and I assumed they were the cause of the voice loss. In a couple of the short term voice loss cases there were enough signs. Decreased or non-stimulation of the nerves to the vocal cords will cause paralysis and voice changes or loss.
